Tamil Community in the UK
In the early 1960's, the Tamils migrated to the United Kingdom for employment opportunities. The majority of the Tamil Community in Canada and the Western Countries origin from Sri Lanka. This is mainly due to the political and ethnic conflict in that country, when minority Tamil community were compelled to learn majority Sinhalese language and there was positive discrimination on University admission and job opportunities against the Tamil community. This compelled the professionals and students to migrate to UK for better opportunity and better education. It is estimated that over one million Tamils have migrated from Sri Lanka since 1983 as a result of the war. There are roughly 200,000 to 250,000 Tamils currently living in the UK . It is estimated that there are over 2,500 Tamil doctors currently serving in the NHS - almost all of them having left Sri Lanka due to the war. Having gone through traumatic conditions, more Tamils left the country for greener pastures. Lack of education, mental trauma of the war etc. put them at the bottom end of the scale in the community in this country. Since 1983 there was a mass exodus of Tamils from Sri Lanka as refugees all over Western Countries including UK, to safeguard their lives from the ethnic killing. This has resulted in increase of Tamil population in UK particularly in London. London Borough of Brent is good enough to accommodate more of the Tamils.

Language
The second generation Tamils priorities are different to that of their parents. The children of the career minded community is interacting well with the British culture, with the recognition of being Tamils. They have a limited knowledge of the Tamil language however. The Tamils speak their language at home, but this only acts to help the second generation understand the language. Satellite broadcasting has brought about a number of Tamil radio and TV stations and they are making a significant impact on the development of cultural values in the community and to broadcast up-to-date news about development in Sri Lanka. The Tamil language is an ancient language (like Latin, Greek, Sanskrit), but still written and spoken by more than 75 million people all over the world. Tamil language has its own grammar and rich in literatures dating back to 10th century B.C. Tamil Language is widely spoken in the following countries and its population is as follows:

Food
The food culture has not changed for the Tamils in the UK, Canada, France. Rice and Curry for the main meal is daily practice. A variety of Sri Lankan meals are prepared, and mushrooming Tamil supermarkets and the catering industry in general is adequately serving the traditional food aspirations of the Tamils.

Religion
The majority of Tamils are Hindus and at least 15% of them are Christians. Vulnerability and social tension has made some Hindus change their religions recently. The Muslim population of Sri Lankan origin speaks Tamil but they identify themselves as Muslims rather than Tamils. It must be noted that mixed marriages also take place as experienced by other communities.
